The Power of Art – Why Every Child Should Experience It

Creativity is an essential skill in child development that starts at a young age. It’s not just about drawing or painting; creativity can help kids solve problems, think outside the box, and communicate their ideas. Art has a way of introducing children to different perspectives as no two people will see the same piece of art the same way. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and how they chose to express those opinions. It opens up to meaningful discussions and communication between a parent and child.

Art stimulates imagination and creativity in their daily lives. It doesn’t matter if we are creating art or observing art as it provides a safe place to explore our complex feelings in a safe and constructive way.

The way that a child sees art is often show casing an insight into their thoughts, feelings and inner worlds. During some of our visits to the art museum, our son will interpret pieces in a way that we didn’t perceive ourselves.

The piece Venice by Thomas Moran 1903. Our son told us “the people on the boat could be sad as they are leaving their home” or “they could be happy as their going on a new adventure.” The piece at the museum lead to us having meaningful conversations with him about the feelings the paintings evoked from him and how he understands it. Due to the queit nature of the museum we were able to pause and think. As we visit art museums, we encounter that each piece is part of different time periods, cultures, and artistic movements. These experiences can inspire new ideas and help children visualize concepts that they might not encounter in everyday life.

The benefits of art is not just about aesthetics; it’s also about problem-solving, critical thinking, and understanding the world. When children look at a painting or a sculpture, they naturally start to ask questions: What’s happening in this picture? Why did the artist choose this color or shape? These types of inquiries help build skills in observation, analysis, and deduction—skills that are valuable in all areas of life. We start to think and ask ourselves and our kids real world thinking questions.

A few studies have shown that children who engage with art at an early age show higher levels of cognitive development. Whether it’s understanding composition, recognizing patterns, or simply enhancing focus, art has the potential to shape a child’s cognitive abilities in profound ways.

Everyone should go and explore art at all ages!
